T-Mobile start met Eco-SIM van 100% gerecycled PVC
T-Mobile start met de uitgifte van de nieuwe Eco-SIMs. Deze Eco-SIMs worden gemaakt van 100% gerecycled PVC afkomstig van oude koelkasten. Ook de verpakkingen van de nieuwe sims zijn FSC gecertificeerd. Door het introduceren van de nieuwe Eco-SIMs draagt T-Mobile verder bij aan haar duurzaamheidsdoelstellingen die omschreven zijn in het Connect to Change plan.
De introductie van de Eco-SIMs draagt bij aan de doelstellingen die T-Mobile vorig jaar april presenteerde tijdens de lancering van ‘Connect to Change’. In dit plan staat hoe de provider een bijdrage levert aan een klimaatvriendelijke samenleving en de reductie van haar CO2 footprint. De telecomprovider verwacht met de introductie van de Eco-SIMs de jaarlijkse productie van 5000kg nieuw plastic voor simkaarten overbodig te maken.
Duurzame tussenstap
In 2021 gaf T-Mobile 1,5 miljoen sims uit, waarvan 40.000 eSIMs. De eSIM is een volledig digitale en duurzamere oplossing die door T-Mobile werd geïntroduceerd in Nederland. Omdat deze simkaart volledig digitaal is stimuleert T-Mobile haar klanten dan ook om uiteindelijk over te stappen op de eSIM. Nog niet alle toestellen ondersteunen eSIM, de Eco-SIM biedt een goede duurzame tussenstap.
Circulair werken
Gero Niemeyer, Financieel Directeur van T-Mobile Nederland en ambassadeur van het T-Mobile Sustainability programma is blij met de introductie: “We zijn een van de grootste telecomproviders van Nederland en vervullen een belangrijke rol in de samenleving. Dat maakt ons verantwoordelijk voor de mensen en de wereld om ons heen. Dit begint bij onze eigen bedrijfsvoering. Een belangrijk onderdeel is de keuze om circulair te werken waar mogelijk. Dat doen we onder andere door gebruik te maken van gerecyclede materialen in onze producten. De overstap naar de nieuwe Eco-SIMs is hier een mooi voorbeeld van. Ons aanbod wordt milieuvriendelijker en we proberen klanten te ondersteunen bij het maken van duurzame keuzes. Onze dagelijkse keuzes worden steeds meer beïnvloed door duurzaamheidsoverwegingen.”
Uitlevering Eco-SIM
De telecomprovider heeft eind januari de eerste Eco-SIMs ontvangen en verwacht uit te leveren in de loop van het eerste kwartaal. De oude sim voorraden worden eerst opgemaakt voordat de eerste leveringen van Eco-SIMs plaatsvinden. Naar verwachting kunnen de eerste klanten over een aantal weken de eerste Eco-SIMs in ontvangst nemen. Het gebruik van de Eco-SIM geldt voor alle merken van T-Mobile Nederland (T-Mobile, Ben, Tele2 en Simpel) en de MVNO’s die gebruik maken van het T-Mobile netwerk.

T-Mobile launches Eco-SIMs made of 100% recycled PVC
T-Mobile has started the distribution of the new Eco-SIMs. These Eco-SIMs are made of 100% recycled PVC originating from old fridges. The packaging of the new SIMS is also FSC-certified. By introducing the new Eco-SIMs, T-Mobile is increasing its contribution to the sustainability goals that are set in the Connect to Change plan.
The introduction of the Eco-SIMs contributes to the goals that T-Mobile presented last year in April during the launch of ‘Connect to Change’. The plan describes how the provider contributes to a climate friendly society and the reduction of its carbon footprint. The telecom provider expects that by introducing the Eco-SIMs the annual production of 5000 kilos of new plastic for new SIM cards will become unnecessary.
Sustainable interim step
In 2021 T-Mobile issued 1.5 million SIMS, of which 40,000 were eSIMs. The eSIM is a completely digital and more sustainable solution that was introduced in the Netherlands by T-Mobile. Because this SIM card is completely digital T-Mobile stimulates its customers to switch to the eSIM. However, not all devices support eSIM, making the Eco-SIMs a sustainable interim step.
Circular work
Gero Niemeyer, Chief Financial Officer of T-Mobile Netherlands and ambassador of the T-Mobile Sustainability program is happy with the introduction: “We are one of the largest telecom providers in the Netherlands and play an important part in society. That makes us responsible for the people and world around us. That starts with our own business operation. An important part is the choice to, where possible, work in circular way. One of the ways we do so is by using recycled materials in our products. The switch to the new Eco-SIMs is a good example of this. Our offer will become more environmentally friendly and we try to support customers by making sustainable choices. Our daily choices are influenced by sustainable considerations.”
Distribution Eco-SIM
The telecom provider received the first Eco-SIMs at the end of January and expects to start the distribution during the first quarter. The old stock of SIMS will be finished first before the first Eco-SIMs will be distributed. The expectation is that the first customers will receive the Eco-SIMs in a couple of weeks. The use of the Eco-SIM applies to all brands within T-Mobile Netherlands: T-Mobile, Ben, Tele2 and Simple and MVNO’s that use the T-Mobile network.
